SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 22

Requesting the state superintendent of schools to include in the public secondary school curriculum a course of study that includes general information on the whole spectrum of local, state and judicial government services and the local, state and judicial taxes that fund those government services.

Whereas, Good government depends on an informed electorate; and
Whereas, The business of government is to provide government services to the people it services; and
Whereas, The cost of government services must be paid for by taxes of one kind or another; and
Whereas, Some knowledge of the local, state and federal government services and the various taxes that pay for those services is necessary if citizens are going to be an informed electorate; and
Whereas, The best, and perhaps the last, time and place to properly inform many citizens of the many government services at the local, state and federal levels and the various taxes that pay for those services is in the secondary schools of our nation; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the state superintendent of schools is hereby respectfully requested to include a required course of study in the public secondary school curriculum that includes general information on the whole spectrum of government services at the local, state and federal levels and of the various taxes that provide the funding for those services; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia superintendent of schools.
